Duane Kenneth (Barney) Voss, age 67, of Cambridge, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2019 at the Community Hospital, McCook, Nebraska. He was born November 29, 1951 in McCook, Nebraska to Elmer DeWayne & Lois A. (Weatherwax) Voss. Duane was raised in the Methodist faith, being baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Arapahoe, Nebraska. He attended Arapahoe Public Schools from kindergarten thru his senior year, graduating with the class of 1970. He then attended Hastings Community College for 2 years. After returning to Arapahoe, he was united in marriage to Carla Schievelbein on September 14, 1973. To this union, two children were born: Dixie Leigh and Mitchell Duane. Duane started his employment in high school, working at the Arapahoe TV and Appliance Repair until 1979. He then worked at New Holland in Lexington, Nebraska. While living in Arapahoe. Duane was an active member of the Isaak Walton League, Arapahoe Fire and Rescue Dept., and enjoyed helping every 4th of July with the annual fireworks display. In 1984, the family moved to Cambridge, Nebraska and Duane started his employment at Cambridge Telephone Company where he remained for 34 years before retiring in 2017. Duane enjoyed hunting, having several precious dogs to accompany him, fishing, camping with the family, and was an active member of the Republican Valley Pheasants Forever Chapter. His specialty was hanging out in the kitchen with the rest of the cooks during the Banquets, and occasionally making some very poor choices of items to bring home from the auctions!!! Duane and his with Carla acquired a cabin at Medicine Creek Dam and loved making wonderful memories there filling their time with boating, camping, fishing, or just hanging out at the fire pit with friends and family. He was also active or the past several years as Treasurer of the Medicine Creek Wildlife Association. Duane was a talented craftsman, creating many woodworking projects thru the years, and more recently carried on his grandparents’ art of leather tooling, making many items for friends and family. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, twin granddaughters Brooke and Jenna Sickels, a niece Jennifer Schroeder, and his mother-in-law Clarice Schievelbein. He is survived to mourn him by his wife of nearly 46 years, Carla, Daughter Dixie and husband Andrew Sickels, their children Paige, Paytin, and Levi Sickels, all of Cambridge, Nebraska and PVT Zack Sickels of Fort Benning, Georgia, Son Mitchell and wife Alicia and their children Zachary and McKenna Voss of Avoca, Iowa. Sister Judy and husband Jerry Schroeder of Arapahoe, Nebraska and brother Larry Voss of Cambridge, Nebraska as well as a host of other family members and friends. Duane made long lasting friendships from his work years and his outdoor interests, and will be missed by many. There will be no viewing or visitation as cremation was chosen. Memorial service will be Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 2 PM at Wenburg Funeral Chapel, 652 Main St., Arapahoe, Nebraska. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.
