Joy Arline Horn, age 88, of Beaver City, Nebraska passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at the Beaver City Manor, Beaver City, Nebraska. She was born on July 8, 1928, at Valentine, Nebraska to Edmond & Grace (Patton) Carter. She graduated from Genoa High School, Genoa, Nebraska with the Class of 1945 and following graduation taught in rural schools in Nance and Platte Counties in Nebraska. Joy married Herman Otte of Columbus, Nebraska at Christ Lutheran Church in 1948. Five sons were born to this union; Michael, Steven, Wayne, Keith, and Chris. Herman passed away in 1973. Following his death, Joy was employed in restaurant management for the next fifteen years. She was employed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Mesa, Arizona, and managed Country Clubs in Nebraska. She was a manager of the Colorado Spring Elks Club at the time of her retirement. On March 28 1987, she was joined in wedlock to Wallace Horn of Granby, Colorado. They resided in the Denver area until 2001 when they move to Beaver City, Nebraska to be near family. Wallace passed away in April of 2002. Throughout her life, joy was active in community activities. After the death of her four year old son Keith, she was coorganizer and first president of the Platte Valley Association for Retarded Children. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Columbus Opportunity for Special Children and was honored by the Columbus PTA with a Life Membership for her work with mentally handicapped children. In Colorado, she was president of the Columbine Newcomers, and volunteered at the Thrift Store in Beaver City. She helped organize the Beaver City Red Hatters and was their first “Queen Mum”. She is survived by her sons: Michael & wife Laura Otte of Beaver City, Nebraska, Wayne Otte of Scottsdale, Arizona Chris & wife Tammi Otte of Oxford, Nebraska, Step-daughter: Beth & husband Randy Abell of Creston, Iowa 12 Grandchildren & 7 Great Grandchildren Sisters Fern Smith of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Iva & husband Leonard Zoucha of Fremont, Nebraska She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Leon Carter, sons Steven & Keith Otte Condolences and personal reflections may be left at wenburgfuneralhome.com No viewing or visitation as cremation was chosen. Memorial service will be Monday, December 5, 2016 at 11 AM at Faith Community Church in Beaver City, Nebraska with Pastor Daryl Kats, officiating. Inurnment will be at the Roseland Cemetery, Columbus, Nebraska. Wenburg Funeral Home of Beaver City, Nebraska is in charge of the arrangements.
