LaVerne W. Hermes, age 87, of Arapahoe, Nebraska died on Monday, December 17, 2012 at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center, in Arapahoe, Nebraska. He was born on November 25, 1925 at Arapahoe, Nebraska to Herman & Louisa (Helms) Hermes.
LaVerne attended Garfield Country School, Trinity Parochial School and graduated from Arapahoe High School with the class of 1943. After his military service, he returned home and began farming. In 1947 he bought a farm 3 miles south of Arapahoe. In 1948 he married Marna Ziebell at the Immanuel Lutheran Church north of Arapahoe, Nebraska. To this union 3 children were born: Kathleen, Dick and Cynthia. To supplement his income he began working as a carpenter and found his second career in life, which he continued until his retirement. Even then he could be found in his shop making craft and hobby items. He entered the Good Samaritan Nursing Home following a stroke in November 2008.
LaVerne was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Arapahoe and served his Lord there in many capacities: Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, Financial Secretary, singing in the choir and helping with church projects. He was an avid supporter of the Arapahoe Senior Center, giving of his time and talents to improve the building and serving on the Board for many years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, taking trips in the 5th wheel camper and he liked nothing better than to engage in a game of cards with his friends. He was a member of the Edison American Legion Post #343.
He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Kathleen Burns, sister Evelyn Hilker, infant brother Victor, and brother-in-law Clifford Hilker.
He is survived by his wife Marna Hermes of Arapahoe, Nebraska

Daughter: Cynthia & husband Gary Pfeiffer of Worland, Wyoming
Grandchildren: 5 Great-Grandchildren: 11

Viewing and visitation will be Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 10 AM till 8 PM at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe, Nebraska and prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be Friday, December 21, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Arapahoe, Nebraska with Rev. James Moshier, officiating. Burial will be at the Arapahoe Cemetery, Arapahoe, Nebraska with military rites given by the Edison American Legion Post #343 of Edison, Nebraska. Wenburg Funeral Home, of Arapahoe, Nebraska is in charge of the arrangements.
