Mildred Elizabeth “Mick” Dawson, age 103, of Elwood, Nebraska formerly of Arapahoe, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the Elwood Care Center in Elwood, Nebraska. She was born on September 24, 1917 in rural Oxford, Nebraska to Joseph and Anna (Haffey) Hays. She was the 3rd of 10 children. Mick attended Hard Scrabble grade school in her neighborhood, and graduated from Oxford High School in 1935. She was united in marriage to Vaughn Dawson at St. Germanus Catholic Church in Arapahoe, Nebraska on September 24, 1937. They made their home in the Turkey Creek area of Gosper County, Nebraska. Mick worked very hard with Vaughn on the farm. They loved to travel and played in a pitch club with the same couples for over 50 years. They retired from farming and moved to Arapahoe in 1980. She enjoyed her retirement by entertaining family and friends. Their home was always the gathering place for the whole family for Easter dinners and other family receptions. Many nieces and nephews would stop after school for a snack and a bottle of pop. She was active in St. Germanus Catholic Church, Altar Society, and the neighborhood Ever Ready Club. She is preceded in death by her husband Vaughn in 2007. Mick then moved to Prairie Pines retirement home for several years, enjoying the friendships of the residents there. She moved to the Elwood Care Center in February of 2013, where she was lovingly cared for by so many. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, brothers; Jim, Joe (Jean), Bill Hays, Sisters and brothersin-law: Katherine (Dale) Bartruff, Bernice (Farrell) Dawson, Elsie Marie (Infant), Lois (Lowell) Dawson, Suz (Hiram) Walker, Tess (Duane & Max Becker) Moor. She is survived by her sisters-in-law: JoAnn Hays and Ruby Martin and many nieces and nephews. Mick was proud of her Irish heritage, and her favorite saying was “Grandma Haffey always said Make time for fun” and she always reminded everyone to do just that. Viewing and visitation will be Tuesday, November 24, 2020 from 4 PM till 8 PM at Wenburg Funeral Chapel, 652 Main Street, Arapahoe, NE. The current health recommendations for faith based services will be followed and the use of a face covering is required. Private Family Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at 1 PM and Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 2 PM at the St. Germanus Catholic Church of Arapahoe, Nebraska with Father Kenneth Wehr, officiating and will also be lived streamed on “Wenburg Funeral Home” Facebook page. Public is invited to the interment which will follow the service at the church, at the Arapahoe Cemetery, Arapahoe, Nebraska.
