Raymond Groff, age 64, of Arapahoe, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, August 27, 2012 at his home in Arapahoe, Nebraska after losing a 19 month battle with colon and liver cancer.
He was born in Vienna, Austria. His father, Duane Groff, met and married his mother, Elfrieda Turpak, while stationed in Vienna as an American soldier. They later moved to Southern California where Ray was raised and educated. He graduated from John Burroughs High School in Burbank, California in 1966.
After two years as a U.S. Marine, he married Paula Jean Schultz, originally from Arapahoe, Nebraska, on February 14, 1970. They celebrated their 40th anniversary in Maui, Hawaii. They celebrated their last, their 43rd, at the Muddy Creek Saloon with family and friends.
Ray worked for McMahan’s Furniture nearly his entire working life, spending much of that time as a long-haul truck driver and, later, as warehouse manager. An injury caused an early retirement and a subsequent move to Arapahoe in 2002. He loved to fish, read, and collect Shrek memorabilia. He loved Shrek movies as they always gave him a good laugh.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Ricky & Ronny Groff, & sister Mary Watchsmith.
Ray’s wishes were to have no services, but he did say it was okay for family and friends to gather and share some refreshments and encouragement. This will take place from 2-5pm on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at the Groff home at 905 7th Street, Arapahoe, and all are welcome. The family has requested that flowers not be sent, and memorials may be given in his name. Wenburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
