Truth Sturtevan

Beaver City, Nebraska. Truth Sturtevant, age 96, of Beaver City, Nebraska went to be with the Lord in her home Friday, March 25, 2011 at her home. She was born, December 25, 1914 on a family farm south of Orleans, Nebraska in the Eldorado Township of Harlan county to John E. and Ruth A. (Branstine) Davis. She was the 7th child of 15 children. The Davis family farmed in Harlan and Furnas Counties. She walked one mile to country school #60 from 1-4th grades. When the family moved to Stamford, Nebraska she attended school at Stamford from 5th thru 10th and then graduated from Orleans, Nebraska High School with the Class of 1934 with a certificate of Normal Training. After graduating she taught grades 1 thru 8 in a country school in Harlan County for two years. She married Walter W. Sturtevant, August 5, 1935, at Madison, Nebraska. Because of the drought/depression the couple spend a year in Oregon and Idaho. Numerous other travelers who had lost their farms due to the dust bowl were also headed west for work. Approximately a year later they returned to Furnas County to joint farm with her husband's parents, Walter H and Mattie Sturtevant. Four children were born to this union, three on a little farm on the Edison, Nebraska Highway. In 1943 the family moved to a farm north of Hollinger where the fourth child was born. Upon retiring from farming in 1975, they moved to Beaver City, Nebraska. Walty and Truth enjoyed traveling the country and sightseeing the states and Europe. They eventually decided to winter in Lake Havasu, AZ. They were members of the Harlan County Campers and Hikers Club and Grange. Her husband Walt died August 27, 1988. Walty, Truth and children were members of the Hollinger, Nebraska Methodist Church since 1943. Truth was a member of the United Methodist Women in which she held different positions of office. After moving to Beaver City, she served as the Activities Director for the Beaver City Manor for 5 years. She was honored for 50 years of membership of the Order of Eastern Star. She was very proud to be among the original planners in building the Beaver City Community Building. Presiding as president of the Beaver City General Federated Women's Club, this organization spearheaded the building drive. On December 8th, 1983 the building was ready for rent. Truth lived her life based on her strong belief in God. As a teenager Truth accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior during a revival at Mascot Bethel Church south of Stamford, Nebraska. She enjoyed her grandchildren, tending her flower garden, quilting, and entertaining. Preceding her in death were her parents, John & Ruth Davis, father & mother-in-law, Walter & Mattie Sturtevant, her Walter in 1988, her son, Rolland in 1999 and his wife, Marvelyn; daughter-in-law Marilyn Sturtevant, son-in-law Russell Howard. Ten siblings, Roy Davis, John Ralph Davis, Grace Coffey, Carl Jacob Davis, George Davis, Mary Nicodemus Koenig, Baby Son Davis, Wilma Stansbury, Theodore Paul Davis, and Ariel McNamara; and a great grandson, Ryan McCarthy. Survivors include: Daughter: Marion Howard of Edinburg, Texas Sons: Walter Sturtevant of Oxford, Nebraska Stephen Sturtevant and wife Linda of Beaver City, Nebraska Grandchildren: 10 Great-Grandchildren; 18 and Great-Great-Grandchildren; 2 Sisters: Dorothy Caswell of Aurora, Colorado Jean Wills of Temple, Texas Winona McGarvey of Salt Lake City, Utah Shirley Jacobsen of Rocky Mount, Virginia Viewing and visitation will be Friday, April 1 at First United Methodist Church at Beaver City from 6 PM until 8 PM, family will be present at visitation at the church. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 10AM with Linda Knipping and Jane Blum, officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery.
